Jon Schueler
1916 - 1992
2016 is the centenary of the birth of the American painter, Jon Schueler. For two decades Jon worked and exhibited within the prevailing New York art scene of the 1960s and 70s which was fuelled by the vanguard of Abstract Expressionists. In 1970 Jon Schueler moved to the Scottish Highlands where he lived and painted in Mallaig for five years and, stimulated by the turbulent weather conditions and surrendering to the isolation, he refined his artistic focus as a painter of nature. He returned to Mallaig on an almost annual basis and it was here - the place that stole his heart - where his final exhibition was held in 1991.
